"Though an old man, I am but a young gardener." Thomas Jefferson

Attracting flowers and butterflies to your Cape Cod Garden

• What flowers will attract butterflies and/or humming birds?
Birds and insects are not only beautiful, they pollinate our plants -- especially important for fruit and vegetable growers. Both hummingbirds and butterflies prefer high nectar plants with certain preferred colors and shapes. The hummers like tubular flowers, butterflies like flat head flowers (Sedum, Echinacea, Achillea) for easy landing.

Note: Hummingbirds arrive on Cape Cod in May, before most of our gardens are in bloom. Welcome them to your yard with a hummingbird feeder to encourage them to keep coming back all season.
• Formula for nectar: 4 parts water, 1 part sugar. Heat and mix until dissolved.
Let cool before filling feeder. Make a jar full and keep in the refrigerator and change often.

Giving privacy to your Cape Cod home

• What can I plant for quick privacy?
Growth rates vary from plant to plant and are affected by site conditions and care. Instant gratification may mean a willingness to purchase a large specimen. Beware of planting monocultures (too much of a good thing) since insect or disease can wipe out your whole mass planting. By celebrating diversity in your plantings you achieve a more natural look and can incorporate features in every season.
