When to Plant on the Cape

• Is fall really a good time to plant?
It is a prime time to plant most things. Cooler air means less stress on the plant and the soil temperature is warm for good root establishment. Also rainfall is usually plentiful. Plants that wake up in spring with an established root system are ready to make top growth. Spring plantings need to establish a root system before top growth begins or flowers can be formed. Understanding how plants grow will help you to have realistic expectations.

Tips for Planting on Cape Cod•

Is there anything special I should do when I plant?
Amend soil, properly size the hole, score roots (if needed), and water. A deep soaking less frequently is more effective and beneficial than a light sprinkle daily. Most plants require one inch of water weekly.
