Watering your plants
• How much water do my plants need?
Ideally plants should receive the equivalent of 1" to 2" of water per week.
¨ Less frequent, deep watering is more effective than frequent shallow watering. Deep watering encourages root growth downward. Shallow watering may not even reach below the mulch and encourages roots to remain too near the soil surface. A shallow, weak root system makes plants vulnerable during hot, dry weather.
¨ Enrich soil with organic matter to increase capacity for holding water and nutrients.
¨ Apply mulch to maintain soil temperature and reduce moisture loss. Keep mulch from directly touching trunk of trees.
